random thoughts from a weekend away with Brownies!

don’t worry, I decided against a blow by blow holiday diary!

The weather   -   it was lovely, all weekend.  So we spent most of our time outside in the vain hopes that we may wear the little yellow perils out.  Yeah right emoticon.

The girls   -   Were, for the most part, lovely.  There were a few home sick ones which meant I spent most of the weekend with at least one slightly glum girl on my knee, sometimes 2, occasionally 3!  This was fine during daylight hours but not so fine whey they appeared at my door in the wee small hours!  Never mind, I drank gallons of tea and was on a permenant sugar rush from all that cake so wasn’t exactly sleeping much anyway.

The food   -   was fab, and even better for not requiring any effort on my part.  There was rather a lot of eating going on between breakfast, elevenses, lunch, "three-ses", tea and supper, I suspect I’ve eaten an entire 4 month’s worth of cake in 4 days.  It was a shock to come home and find that I have to make my own brews again…. got kind of used to a nice warm drink being pressed into my hand every few hours.

The activities  -  including campfire with some Senior Section girls (translation - what you become once you go past 14 in Guiding, you can stay in it until you are mid 20s and then you are deemed to be a grown up!) which was great fun but I got teh impression that some of the girls thought such silliness was too imature for them…. sad isn’t it?  Never mind, one day they too will be big and will enjoy acting the fool!  We made good use of the adventure playground where 20 girls attempted to give me heart failure by hanging off play equipment and occaisionally falling off too.   We also had various challenges like scavenger hunts and retrieving sweets from the bottom of jugs….. the jugs had jelly in by the way….

The "duties"   -   I was there as First Aider, as usual.  Last year I was running an asthma clinic in my room with a small pack of girls with varying degrees of understanding of how their medication was supposed to be taken…. they had a much better idea at the end of it!!!  This year I was running a dispensary with several on antibiotics (presented by mothers who had no idea if they needed to be taken before, during or after meals and in fact didn’t know that it could matter…) and one who got through several gallons of calpol and nurofen for children due to the ear infection that she was taking ABs for!  Oh, and I sent one to hospital with a suspected fractured scaphoid after doing a swan dive off the top bunk but which the nurse declared to be sprained.  Still think it was a fracture….  Either way the girl was still in considerable pain when picked up on Monday but was of the bloody minded character that meant that she carried on regardless (climbing trees, swinging off bunk beds….) and didn’t let a very sore hand/wrist spoil her fun.

The Guiders  -  are good friends, and great company.

So all in all another fab long weekend.  Do I qualify for my Brownie Pack Holiday badge please?
