some days I hate the net!

I’ve been trying to sort out a last few things on the internet before packing, just minor things like checking I’ve got addresses, checking for major holdups on the roads and setting my phone to Twitter so Jo or Nic can "text me" from the comfort of their PC if they need to.  However, when TalkTalk said we would get "up to 8meg" what tehy actually meant was that we would get "somewhere around 3meg on a good day" which is okay I guess but they omitted to say that for a fair chunk of the time we would get 1meg or less and it will drop out intermittently.  Not only that they omited to say taht any problem would be blamed on either our modem (that’s the one they supply folks!) or our phone wiring in the house (done by BT and checked every time we get a line fault).

Only when we jump up and down and throw screaming hissy fits will they deign to send out the BT engineers who will repeatedly replace the same junctions without replacing the cabling in between them which is where the very first engineer we had out said the problem actually is (it’s underground cabling, not in any sort of trunking so after 40+ years it’s fair to assume it’s in a less than perfect condition)  They will then call us back a few days latter and assure us that BT have fixed the problem and they are closing the complaint whilst I try to explain that a) the net is still dropping out and b) the phone line is still noisy and thus not working as it should work.  There is a pause and they assure me that they can’t hear any hissing, which is true, the noise is on the incoming line, never the outgoing one.

And thus, in the ast hour since I reset the modem (because sometimes resetting it will help) I’ve had just under 15 minutes of up-time at an average speed of 400k  which I think I’m right in saying is slower than dial up.  Good job braodband is free with TalkTalk otherwise I’d be REALLY cross!
