finally planted seeds!
today we have planted sweetpeas in loo roll middles, these have been well and truely soaked (for a week or so, not the overnight recomended on teh packet!) so we could see that most have germinated and I just how they didn’t take too much of a battering at Aprilia’s hands!
Then we put giant sunfowers into plastic cups (a few in each as I usually have awful results with these and wanted to sew plenty in the hopes of getting a few decent ones!) and "teddy bear" sunflowers into real pots (having run out of recycling oportunities by this point!)
Whilst on a roll (and still with some compost left!) we opened what Aprilia thought was a packet of nastursiums but turned out to be dwarf marigolds (with a variety name begining with N) so we scattered those over a seed tray rather more thickly than I would have liked but it will give her practice at thinning out I suppose.
I have some cuttings off our lavender going in marg tubs as they are all getting woody and sad looking so I want to start again with fresh ones or at least fill in the gaps with some new stock. Plus Aprilia wants some lavender in her garden patch and I’m beign indulgant with this one (not so indulgant with her wanting her own rhubarb, apple tree, weeping willow…..)
That leaves us with carrots which I think I want to do in tubs as they did very poorly in our clay last year, broccoli which I will start out inside and then decide about where to put in a month or so and the runner beans which I don’t need to worry about yet as they seem to be very forgiving of my gardening ineptitude but which I will start off indoors in glass jars so we can do our anual "coo, look, this one has germinated" routine then plant out once the stalk has hardened off past the first 2 sets of leaves by which point the slugs can’t graze off the plant to the base (they just nip off the tops so they bush out, saving me the trouble of nipping out)
And I want to re-start the herb garden too but I’m still dithering about where to put it. I’m wondering about teracotta pots on a brick base so that they will act like "storage heaters" and keep the herbs warmer but finances don’t really stretch to terracotta at the moment so herbs are going to ahve to wait or languish in tiny pots on the window ledge for a bit longer.
