No really, they were!!!

It seems there’s a drive to get the area kitted out with the "fit and forget" style of smoke alarms - the ones with a 10 year battery - at the moment.  We got a slip through the door yesterday saying that the fire service were offering safety checks and smoke alarms but as they had done my house when Aprilia was a baby (it was promoted through the HV service then) I didn’t phone the number to book a visit.  Ours were teh old style change the battery every year sort but I’m capable of that and they still worked so I was happy.  But they knocked on teh door at lunchtime anyway.  Aparently they had a few to do on teh street so they thought they would bring enough for everyone and see who else was at home.  The new ones are MUCH LOUDER than the old ones and have a really big mute button (to quote the man who was showing me how they work "the button is big enough to be poked by a broom so you don’t need to do the balancing act on a dining chair any more")  Hmmmm, they been looking in through my windows?????  They did the whole fire safety thing -

use a deep fat fryer not a chip pan on the hob and if it does go wrong for any reason switch it off at the wall, throw damp tea towels over it adn call them out
Make sure the toaster  isn’t  under any units when you use it as sometimes  units can get  scorched over time then catch fire
Shut all the downstairs doors at night ("oh, you don’t have a living room door?  You really should you know"…. u-huh, you told us that 6 years ago too…..)
Swtich things off at the wall not just put them in standby
Don’t leave tumble dryers going when you go to bed (actually I know someone whose house did catch fire from that so I am ultra careful if I do resort to using it)
Have a fire escape plan ie if you can’t get down the stairs safely then have a room with a fully opening window, a phone and good fitting door, go in there, open the window, shut the door and put a towel at the bottom then phone for help - that would be the bathroom then, it’s the only room with a fully opening, accessable window in the house!

After that they did a really quick pep talk with Aprilia about dialing 999 and how to ask for help and did a good impression of "ooh, clever girl, well done for already knowing most of that" which produced one of those utterly dazzling smiles taht my dd turns loose on people from time to time.  Then one of them talked DS with her whilst the other finished fitting the alarms.  Great PR.  And they do visits to youth clubs for free too so I shall be booking them for Rainbows next term (for the educational value you understand, not so that I can hope for another pair of hunks to swoon over….)

Education happened, excercise happened, chores even happened! And I even managed to get a bit of reading time for me so I shall have finished the  main "source book" by the time my course starts in 2 weeks and will probably have got a week or so into the course too.  Looking forward to this one, assuming the course is as well written as the source book!
