debating possiblitites for Nic Camp

Well, obviously this depends on the Family Railcard arriving in time (why oh why did I not order it when Joyce blogged it the other week???) but if it does then it will cost me under £60 for the pair of us to get down and home again in under 4 hours on the train but then having a 4 mile walk (or cadging a lift off someone??) from Shorham-on-Sea train station (and either a bus or cadging lifts to get across town to our train station) as opposed to about £50 in fuel and roughly 6 hours of me battling the M6, M25 and various A roads, shouting at the SatNav, getting a numb bum but having door to door transport.

I can see the advantages of both really.  Aprilia would love to go by train and it appeals to me too as someone else gets to do the work whilst I just need to entertain one child (which I would still need to do a bit of if driving) but it’s the hassle at both ends of the journey as trains don’t take you door to door!!!!

So. Opinions in the comments box!

  1. I love the train, and always think about doing it, but with 3 or 4 of us sometimes it isn’t cost effective. One day we will!

My railcard came really quickly so hopefully yours will too.

    Sorry, not helpful!

  2. What time does your train get into Shoreham?

  3. I’d probably do train. Well actually I probably wouldn’t cos I always bring too much stuff and hate asking for favours, but if I was you I’d come by train.
We’ll come and fetch you from the station - we’re already fetching Ali and F, I’ve offered to collect the Greenhouse gang from the station if they want to come visiting for the day while we’re there and have also offered a couple of other people rides if needed. We have two seven seater cars and a collection of car seats, and living so near have no journey of our own so am quite happy to help out others :)

  4. These Family Railcards look like a great idea. You can get a third off your First Class ticket, just so long as you have a little oik travelling in the cattle truck.

Where does one hire the oiks from though?

  5. Darn, just noticed that you can’t use them for First Class tickets. One will have to stick to travelling in one’s Bentley.

  6. hey, if I could afford First Class rail travel I’d look at hiring a private plane and flitting down to the airfield!!!

  7. What do you mean you can’t afford First Class rail travel. You are paying for it for your MP.

  8. Thanks Nic, I shall almost certainly let the train take the strain then (assuming the railcard gets to me in time!) Will book tickets as soon as I get my card and let you know what time it gets me to Shoreham.

  9. Tim, that’s exactly why I can’t afford it…. if I wasn’t paying my MP so much I’d be quids in ;-)

  10. We can offer a lift too, either for arriving/leaving, or if we go out anywhere - we’ll have a 7-seater, and we’re only coming from Portsmouth and going back there on Friday
