T-Bird Anni Rides Again

hmmm

on teh daily rounds of my Sage feeds I came on this article about dealing with sibling conflicts.  Now, obviously I’m in my Ifory Tower here as I only have the one child so don’t have to deal with the bickering etc but I just felt that somehow it was an overly complicated way to deal with the whole thing of always wanting to be first.  Also it struck me as odd that a school teacher should be suggesting how a family dealt with conflicts within the home.

and the punch line of it’s taught the elder child about the value of other people just seemed very odd, surely you don’t need a chart and a day when someone else gets to make all the choices to teach a child to respect and value other people?

  1. I tell them they need to take turns, and ask them how they’d feel if they were always the last one. I don’t need a magnet and calendar set to do it (although as Tim has just pointed out, at least they’d be learning to use the calendar too…)

  3. what we’re missing is the retail ops - next there will be a magnet and book set that you can buy to help your offspring learn about taking turns. (And if there isn’t one already, quick, design it!)

  4. I think that a whole day is a long time for a three year old to wait for their turn at choosing!
But my older two aren’t that competitive, they seem to realise that much more fun can be had if they co-operate. Occasionally they do argue over a toy and I try and use a “five minutes each” timer, but they have usually both moved on to something else by the time the first timer goes off - then it just reminds them of what they were fighting over in the first place and they start all over again *rolls eyes* . I have to try and remember to disable the timer before it beeps! I imagine if we implemented a whole day each system it would lead to them becoming more competitive.

  6. Hmm, sounds like a stupid idea to me. And massively open to abuse, lol!
